A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday night in Rocky Point, Suffolk police say.
Ruth Ellerd, 66, of Ridge, veered off Rocky Point-Yaphank Road near Whiskey Road around 9 p.m. and struck a tree, according to police.
Ellerd was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Police say a responding Suffolk officer was later hit while sitting in his patrol car by a police department tow truck.
The officer was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
