A young woman was killed in a single-car crash in Middle Island early Sunday morning, and police say the driver is facing charges.
Investigators say 21-year-old Dawn Pierce, of Bayport, was drunk behind the wheel when she lost control of her Ford Edge on Wading River Hollow Road. The vehicle slammed into a tree just south of Scenic Hills Drive around 2:30 a.m.
A female passenger in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified as Jacqueline Grawunder, 24, of Yaphank.
Two male passengers in the SUV were hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. They have been identified as Alexander Rikimoto, 21, of Shirley, and Michael Rempe, 22, of Franklin Square.
The driver, Pierce, was hospitalized with serious injuries. She is being charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned at a later date, police say.
Neighbors who spoke with News 12 say cars frequently speed down their road.
