An Islip woman was arrested for driving while intoxicated after police say she crashed into an ambulance, causing a patient to be thrown from a stretcher onto the street and suffer additional injuries.
Police say the incident happened Sunday around 2:15 a.m. on Main Street in Bay Shore, as members of the Islip Fire Department were loading a 26-year-old Islip man into the ambulance with its emergency lights activated.
Investigators say a Honda Accord struck the ambulance, forcing the stretcher carrying the patient to be ejected from the ambulance and knocking the injured man into the street.
The patient incurred additional injuries from the crash, but was not seriously injured. No other injures were reported.
A second ambulance was dispatched, which took him to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police says officers determined the driver of the Honda, Edith Cairo, 32, of Islip, was intoxicated and arrested her at the scene.
She is charged with driving while intoxicated.
