A deal has been reached to revitalize the SunVet Mall in Holbrook, and a Whole Food Market is expected to be one of the centerpieces.
Developers say the mall will be reimagined as an open-air 168,000-square-foot shopping center.
Holbrook Chamber of Commerce President Rick Ammirati gave News 12 an exclusive sneak peek at the tentative plans for the site.
"Whole Foods will be in what was formerly the Pathmark location," Ammirati says. "And then you'll have some other walkable areas and different stores."
A Citibank that is still in the shopping area will remain. Other possible businesses include a Starbucks and restaurants.
"To see it now is heartbreaking - to see the opportunity is heartwarming," Ammirati says.
Ammirati says he hopes to work with the state and the Town of Islip to find a solution about an increase in traffic to the area.
Construction is set to begin later this year. At that point, it is expected that more will be known about the retailers coming to the center.
