Residents in Dyker Heights say a man disappeared down a manhole for hours, in an incident that was caught on camera.

Video shows a man in a bright jacket lifting the cover and dropping down around 8:30 p.m. last Friday Dec. 5. Neighbors say he did not emerge until 2 a.m. Saturday Dec. 6, about five hours later.

Residents say they called police, but officers were gone by the time the man returned. They say they want to know what is going on underground and for someone to check that it is safe for the neighborhood.

“I have two kids in the house. And I don’t know what is happening. I don’t know if this person is building a bomb. I don’t know if he’s cutting wires. I don’t know if he has a tunnel or what can he get in my house?” said Sandra, who lives nearby. “Like, I don’t know what the possibilities are.”

News 12 reached out to the Department of Environmental Protection and is waiting to hear back. Police say they are still searching for the suspect.
