This is such an incredibly dangerous situation to be in for many reasons. Did you know that a single bolt of lightning can be around five times hotter than the surface of the sun? An average bolt of lightning also contains 300 million volts, enough to power a small town for an entire day!

Here are some tips to stay safe when lightning is a possibility:

  • When thunder roars, head indoors as quickly as possible.

  • If you are unable to find safety indoors, make sure you avoid metal, wires and standing near trees.

  • Lightning can strike up to 10 miles outside of a thunderstorm's rain, so anytime a thunderstorm is close by, even if not at your location just yet, stay inside.

  • Of course, if you have a situation where someone is struck by lightning, immediately

call 911 for help, and listen to their advice while you wait for assistance.

The entire News 12 Storm Watch Team will always let you know when lightning is possible with frequent severe weather updates on social media, on-air and on the FREE News 12 app.
