West Nile virus has been reported in two Queens residents, the New York City Health Department confirmed today.
These are the first human cases of West Nile virus for the 2025 season.
The announcement comes amid widespread detection of the virus in mosquito pools across all five boroughs since July.
One individual was diagnosed with West Nile fever, briefly hospitalized, and has since been discharged. The second patient is currently hospitalized with West Nile neuroinvasive disease, suffering from encephalitis — an infection in the brain.
In addition to these confirmed cases, West Nile virus was found in blood donations from two individuals — one rom Brooklyn and one from Staten Island. Two more suspected cases, both from Brooklyn, are under investigation.
