Four alleged thieves have been arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars' worth of purses from an East Hampton store.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney says 48 bags worth around $94,000 were stolen from the Balenciaga store.
"It is happening in East Hampton, it's also happening in Brentwood and Huntington, on the western side of Suffolk County and all part in between," Tierney says.
The store's surveillance video captured the alleged thieves, all from New Jersey, entering the store and taking 48 handbags in 20 seconds before fleeing.
Tiernay says he is seeing an "explosion" in the number of crimes across the county.
According to the district attorney, the five alleged purse robbers fled the Balenciaga store in a Durango and were pursued by village police and then a New York state trooper.
The car was going over 100 mph on Sunrise Highway before stopping near Exit 69.
Tierney says two suspects stayed in the car and one was apprehended after running from the scene. Another female who initially stayed at the car fled and remains unidentified.
The district attorney says his office is committed to prosecuting these kinds of crimes.
"We will not tolerate it," Tierney says
Three of the defendants were arraigned Wednesday. Two were held and one suspect, Ali Harris, walked out of court and is on supervised release. Another suspect did not show up for arraignment, and there is a warrant out for their arrest.
The defendants are facing charges of grand larceny, criminal possession of a controlled substance and others.
A total of 34 handbags were recovered, but the rest are still missing.
