Students are set to head back to school Monday after the holiday break amid record-breaking COVID infections.
New York’s statewide coronavirus positivity rate hit 22% Thursday, but school districts across Long Island are still preparing for schools to be open and in-person.
Dr. John Zaso, East Meadow School District physician, says they are not seeing intra-school spread and that it is safe for children to go back to in-person learning.
“People are not ending up in the ICU, which is good,” Zaso says. “Particularly children, half, more than half, 85% of them are asymptomatic so we’re going full steam ahead with the reopening.”

Masks will still be required on Monday.
