Students
are set to head back to school Monday after the holiday break amid
record-breaking COVID infections.
New York’s statewide coronavirus positivity rate hit 22% Thursday, but school
districts across Long Island are still preparing for schools to be open and
in-person.
Dr. John Zaso, East Meadow School District physician, says they are not seeing
intra-school spread and that it is safe for children to go back to in-person
learning.
“People are not ending up in the ICU, which is good,” Zaso says. “Particularly
children, half, more than half, 85% of them are asymptomatic so we’re going
full steam ahead with the reopening.”
School superintendents have been in close contact with Gov. Kathy Hochul’s
office and local health departments and will continue to do so over the
weekend.
Masks will still be required on
Monday.
