Two Chaminade High School officials are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a student who went into cardiac arrest during basketball practice.
P.J. Kellachan, 17, had a seizure and his heart stopped on Tuesday evening.
Assistant coach Bob Paul rushed to the player's side and did not feel a pulse.
"We knew his life was on the line at that point," Paul said.
Athletic trainer Jorge Vargas sprinted to get the AED and do chest compressions while head coach Dan Feeney called the paramedics to come.
Paul said they shocked him and no heartbeat was detected so they started CPR.
As all of this happened, Kellachan's teammates guided the first responders to the gym and prayed for their teammate's survival.
After a 10-minute battle, their prayers were answered and Kellachan was revived.
Kellachan returned to school on Friday to thank his coaches for showing strength in unity when he needed it most.
"It's really heroic and it's, I think in the future, CPR and AED training is something I should like definitely learn how to do because I could change a life the way my coaches did to me," Kellachan said.
The 17-year-old student says he is still undergoing tests to determine what caused him to go into cardiac arrest.
He is hopeful he will be playing basketball again soon.
