The snowstorm has left a Wantagh family stranded in the Caribbean and with more than $20,000 in resort fees.
Nora Orlando said she and her family tried to get home ahead of the storm. They canceled their last night at the Royalton Antigua resort to fly back to New York on Saturday.
Orlando, however, said their flight was canceled, and the resort could only accommodate them for one extra night, charging them more than $3,300.
For Sunday night, Orlando said the family, who is in the Caribbean to celebrate a family birthday, booked rooms at the Sandals resort next door. She said that charge was almost $18,000.
Orlando said she and her family are hoping to get their money back from either the hotel or their airline.
"We're going be paying this forever," Orlando said. "It's not like we chose to stay here. We're trying desperately to get home and they did not make it easy, and they were not compassionate at all."
Orlando told News 12 that the family did sign a written statement with the Royalton Antigua, affirming they were leaving a day early.
News 12 reached out to resort for more details, and to see if other guests from New York are in similar situations but did not receive any comment as of Saturday night.
