Uh Spooky tradition is back in Stony Brook. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization is holding its 34th annual scarecrow competition and the voting is open now, news tells Jen Selig is at the Stony Brook Village Center right now where they are all lined up. So, what's happening here, Jen? Well, what I'm learning is that the scarecrows are getting more and more creative every single year. Take a look at this one. This is the Village Mediums so good with me. I have many. She's with the Word Me Heritage Organization and this is a tradition here in, um, right here in the Village Center. Correct. We've been having the annual Scarecrow Festival and Halloween Festival for just over 30 for the third, 34th annual year. Oh my gosh. And each year they're getting better and better and there's a few winners, right? I mean, voting already started, but folks could still still take part in it. Voting is from now until October 25th. You just go to your favorite shop here in Stony Brook Village, pick up a ballot, pick a winner in each of the three categories and then we award prizes to each different category. Our prizes will be awarded on Halloween as part of our 34th annual Halloween festival. We have the festival from two until 5 p.m. There's music, games, dancing and then at 330 they announce the winners of the scarecrow competition. I love it. Why is it so important for this to happen here for us to see the scarecrows and all of this going on as part of our founder, Ward Melville's dream to just bring the community here. This continues that mission. It brings the shop owners together. A number of them have scarecrows. It brings the community groups together. We have scarecrows from desperate girl scout troops, the library, um and other organizations here in the neighborhood and it just brings everybody together every year to uh celebrate the fall. I love it. I love it. So you gotta come here, you gotta shop local and you can vote too. We're gonna stick around all morning long. Check out some more scarecrows right here. Spooky season is back and so is a beloved tradition in Stony Brook. The Ward Mellville Heritage Organization is holding its 34th annual scarecrow competition and you can take part. New South Jen Selig is in Stony Brook. Now, telling us all about it, showing us some of the spooky competition. We've already seen some great scarecrows jet, some spooky, some cute. This is Boni here. She's looking f with me. I have Linda Baker who's also looking f here. You are the business owner of a jewelers. You've been here for a few years, but been in business for decades and 252 years, 52 years. So you know the importance about shopping local. Absolutely. It's been our man for the last 52 years. It's that to deal personally with somebody and to have an atmosphere like this, it's not commercial. It's, it's just beautiful to come into town and everything comes full circle. We started in Stony Brook, but Stony Brook by the train station, moved to Port Jeff and now we're back here and to have events, contests like these are very important to business owners like yourself because you're starting with the younger generation and they're comfortable here. They come here and, like, our Bonita was my grandchildren's, you know, a work of art creation. And, uh, they wanted her pretty, I wanted her scared, you know, or scary. But either way it's fun. There's some great ones here in the village. We have taken a stroll and we saw some really nice ones and we'll show you throughout the morning. But how can folks get involved if they wanna take part and vote? 00, there's every store owner has ballots. And, um, me personally, I'm always in favor of the ones that are made by Children. There are some that are just so creative and, you know, it wasn't ordered from cable. It was, they built it from scratch and it's good. So, um, yeah, come on down to the village. You can grab an ice cream, a coffee stroll around the kids. Love it. Absolutely love it. And the announcer will be, the winners will be announced on Halloween. So you have a lot of time to come down here to the village to cast your vote. And of course, the shop too. So of course we're gonna be here in Stony Brook Village throughout the morning, checking out more scarecrows back to you in the studio. Rich.

I get at the Stony Brook Village Center right now where they're all lined up. We've seen a whole lot of contenders, Jen. I know Rich. They get better and better. This one right here is gorgeous and it's all made by Katie here, Kate. You are the business owner for Kate's vintage rose, all things, vintage and pink. I mean, the vibe in there is so pretty. So obviously you got to dress the scarecrow to your business. Yes, absolutely. It was a good time for sure. Yeah. How long did it take you to make that? Five days? But straight now you've been on News 12 before made on Long Island. You make customized accessories, custom veils, clothing. Uh So this is, this is just fun for you to do. Yes. It was fun to kind of go out of my comfort zone a little bit and get to use glue, which is unusual for me. Everything takes longer when you sew it. So that was a good time. How will this impact business do you think? I think, I mean, the whole community you can tell comes down to see all the different creations and it definitely is like a nice family day out. You get to go eat, then you happen upon a shop. So it's really, really great for small businesses hoping to win. That would be fantastic. I know a lot of people are hoping to win. You can vote, people can come into your store. Right. And, and they just ask if they can have a ballot. That's it super easy. And then the winner will be announced on Halloween. So it's fun here. You still got time to go shopping to vote and hang out right here in Stony Brook Village. Back to you in the studio. Right.

Now telling us all about it, showing us some of the competition. I mean, this is a lot of work, Jen and really impressive. People put days into making these scarecrows and they look absolutely amazing, including Billy Joel right here with Marguerite and Lily. You ladies are with the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame and it was only right to make a Billy Joel scarecrow. Exactly. Bill. So how did the idea come about? You ladies came together, you brainstorm and then you just put together. Yeah, like I was saying before I was pulling into the parking lot and I always like doing the scarecrows. I did it a few times with my daughter's girl scout troop and I was saying to myself, oh, I would love to do it and I pulled into work and I walked in and Lily's like, do you wanna do a scarecrow? I'm like, yes. So obviously Billy Joel And I said, well, how about Billy Goul? And then it just snowballed from there and we put him together and it's only right to create him because of the exhibit that you guys have to offer too to Long Island area. That's right. Um Our exhibit is called Billy Joel my Life. So we decided Billy Goul my afterlife. And um and away, we went with uh with creating this uh wonderful specimen. I mean, you ladies got really creative here, your gym pants, your son's shirt, your husband's tie. It looks so great. So where can people cast their vote if they're interested? They can come, they can come, they can cast their vote. The ballots are located in all of the village stores and um I think the voting ends on October 25th. They can come into the museum, they could see our exhibits and enjoy the town because there's so much to do here and to be part of this wonderful competition and annual event. For sure. Uh Spooky tradition is back in Stony Brook. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization is holding its 34th annual scarecrow competition and voting is open right now. New Souls Jen Zelig is at the Stony Brook Village Center now where they're all lined up and really some incredible creations, Jen, they really are rich and like I said, they come in all different shapes and sizes, including a school bus. And the cold part is some of the stories behind them stories that go back 20 plus years, Jan and Marie, you guys have been best friends, grew up together, neighbors actually living in Stony Brook and now you decided to enter this annual competition. Yeah, we decided this year we've been coming here for years and years and Jenna was like, let's do it. And I was like, ok, we're gonna do it. I love it. And the detail in that is so cool and they even have a picture when you girls were so little waiting for the bus. I mean, what made you think of the idea of making a bus? Yeah. So um after all this time, we were brainstorming and really thinking about it and you know, we wanted to be really interactive for the kids because when we came as kids, we loved looking at all of them. Um And we were thinking about the picture when we were little kids waiting for the bus and we thought that's what we have to do. I love it, the creativity, but also the story behind each scarecrow I think makes this competition so unique. So what can folks do? How can you make them vote for? You? Definitely come down to all the stores. You could get a ballot in the store and then come vote or 102. So that would be great if you could vote for us. Um But yeah, and then you also enjoy watching these other scarecrows too and, and watching people create them too. You probably recognize some of them as well. Yeah, every year, you know, we are just so inspired by all of the creativity this year. They are like exceptional. So everyone should definitely come on down. There's so much to do in the village. Grab a bite to eat coffee, ice cream. There's something for everyone and come take a picture of the bus, just put your head right out of the window there. J Andy. Thank you.
