John Avlon, a former CNN anchor, defeated Nancy Goroff in the Democratic primary for New York's 1st Congressional District.

Avlon will now face incumbent Republican Rep. Nick Lalota in a general election in November.

The current Sag Harbor resident says he entered the race to address the affordability crisis and defend abortion rights.

Republicans have been in control of the district for a decade.
