A group of volunteers is making significant upgrades to the family home of disabled veteran in Amityville.
Volunteers from Lowe's and the nonprofit "Rebuilding Together Long Island" have been working at Vanadis Mitchell's home for the past couple of months to make upgrades to help the Army veteran and her family. Mitchell lives in the home with her seven adopted children, her sister and her nephew.
The 55-year-old is a Gulf War veteran. She is also a survivor of a ruptured brain aneurysm and suffers from hearing loss, which she developed while serving in the Army. Her sister, Valerie, who had a stroke, and her nephew, Christopher, who was born with cerebral palsy, also live in the home.
The upgrades to the home include a front entrance ramp to make it easier for Valerie and Christopher to get in and out of the house. Bedrooms and bathrooms have also been modified to become handicap-accessible.
Lowe's supplied a $15,000 grant to make the renovations possible. The work should be complete within the next couple of days.
