A Memorial Day tradition that was canceled last year due to the pandemic returned Saturday morning to honor fallen soldiers.
Volunteers laid flags at each of the 357,000 headstones of fallen warriors buried at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale.
Theodore McComisky said he and the rest of his Boy Scout troop didn't mind being out in the rain to help place flags. He said he was disappointed when the event was canceled last year.
“It was a shame we couldn't get out to these people, but I'm glad to be out here again today making up for it,” he said.
Veteran Anthony Vidot, of Babylon, says flag placement is his way of saluting comrades who did not make it home.
“A lot of guys gave the ultimate, they gave their life and they can't be here no more,” Vidot says. “So, I do this in respect for all my veterans and comrades that paved the way for all of us.”
Volunteers also gathered at Calverton National Cemetery on Saturday to adorn headstones with flags.
