The Village of Hempstead marked Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday with an evening of music, culture and recognition, honoring residents whose contributions have helped strengthen the community.

The celebration, held at Kennedy Memorial Park, brought together families, local leaders and performers for an event highlighting the rich cultural traditions that make up one of Long Island's most diverse communities.

"It reminds society that we matter as a voice, that we matter as a community," said Pastor Rolando Rosales, one of the residents recognized during the event.

Led by Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr. and village officials, the celebration honored residents for their contributions through business, community service and civic engagement. Among those recognized were Rolando Rosales, pastor of Iglesias Long Island Para Cristo Inc., and Xavier Rodriguez, Director of Music, Media and Fine Arts for the Hempstead Union Free School District.

"This is just our way to celebrate and embrace the diversity that's in the Village of Hempstead," Hobbs said.

Rodriguez said the recognition reflects the importance of culture and the arts in the community.

"I'm very proud to get this recognition," Rodriguez said. "This community is so enriched with its community members that culture, art and music are embedded in the community."

The event also featured performances from Caribbean Swing, Hope Praise Dance Ministry and local students, including musicians from Evergreen Charter School. Organizers said the celebration serves as an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the Latino community while preserving cultural traditions for future generations.

Student performer Christopher Rodriguez said the event gave him a chance to showcase his heritage through music.

"I embrace and love where I am from and love all the sacrifices my parents have made," he said. "I'm happy I get to show my voice through my instrument."

According to organizers, nearly half of Hempstead's population identifies as Latino, making Hispanic Heritage Month an important opportunity to celebrate the cultural heritage that helps unite the village.
