The Village of Garden City filed a lawsuit over plans to bring a resort and casino to the Nassau Coliseum.

The suit that was filed in Nassau State Supreme Court asks the court to void the 42-year lease agreement for the Nassau Coliseum between the county and Las Vegas Sands.

The lawsuit claims lawmakers violated state rules by not taking a hard enough look at the potential impact a casino could have on the environment.

Nassau restarted the planning and environmental review process once already, following a lawsuit by Hofstra University last year.

The casino proposal includes two hotels with 1,600 rooms, and the resort company also wants to expand the Meadowbrook State Parkway to accommodate more people coming to the area.

A civic group News 12 spoke with says the casino will have a negative impact on the community and applauds Garden City filing the lawsuit against the county.

"They have really not followed state, federal, or local laws in everything they've done. You have to look at pollution, you have to look at the environment, they haven't, they haven't done their work," said Richard Williams, with Say No to the Casino.

Garden City's mayor tells News 12 she believes the county and sands bypassed the requisite environmental review process to fast strack the development.

Nassau County and Las Vegas Sands declined to comment Friday night.

An environmental review hearing over the plan is scheduled to take place in Mineola on Monday.
