The family members of those lost in the TWA Flight 800 tragedy gathered in Smith Point Park Monday to mark the 10th anniversary of the crash.
The Boeing jetliner exploded in midair just off Long Island?s south shore on July 17, 1996, killing all 230 aboard. The Paris-bound 747 carried 14 Long Islanders. Governor George Pataki (R-NY) and other local politicians were on hand to dedicate the last piece of the memorial to those who perished.
The 14 flags representing the nations of the deceased were lowered to half mast Monday afternoon. The Coast Guard performed a flyover at 8:31 p.m., the exact moment the plane exploded.
