Long Island veterans groups are sounding the alarm as they face financial losses due to a decline in membership and COVID-19 shutdowns.

Some organizations are facing the risk of closing, merging or shutting down for good.

Commander Sabrina Lacy of VFW Post 6431 in Brentwood is proud of what her facility offers veterans but says they are in trouble financially. She says money is needed to fix the building's roof.

Commander Joseph Clark of American Legion Post 1066 in Massapequa says veteran posts are needed because they offer safe haven.

"You can come here and it's a safe place to come because each and every individual has gone through the exact thing that you have," Clark says.

Long Island veteran groups say they are counting on younger veterans to let other veterans know they are not forgotten.

Veteran groups say people can help their local posts by donating and considering hosting their next function at their facilities.
