A vaxmobile was out in Long Beach Friday continuing its mission of vaccinating as many people as possible in the Town of Hempstead against COVID-19.
The vaxmobile is not giving out third doses yet, after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are now recommending a third COVID-19 shot for people who are immunocompromised.
After seeing Mount Sinai South Nassau's vaxmobile parked outside Long Beach city hall, resident Sean Colgan decided it was time to get his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
"I was always planning on getting the vaccine, I just didn't want to be an early adopter like most things, so I wanted to take my time," he said.
The vaxmobile administered more than 50 shots, vaccinating people as old as 90 to kids as young as 12.
To date, the vaxmobile has vaccinated more than 5,000 people in the Town of Hempstead.
"People do feel comfortable when it's right in their backyard. And also you walk by it, you see the bus, you see the sign that says mobile vaccinations and you're like, 'Alright, I'm just going to go do it,'" said Dana Sanneman, of Mount Sinai South Nassau.
Sanneman also explained as to why the vaxmobile did not administer third doses of the shot.
"We don't have a lot of guidance yet about what's going to be required, so until we're able to formally announce anything, I would just talk to your doctor," she said.
The vaxmobile will keep making stops every day in the Town of Hempstead to administer the vaccine to as many residents as possible.
The next stop for the vaxmobile will be in Baldwin on Monday.
