Uniondale makes history winning first Section VIII girls wrestling dual meet championship

Girls wrestling in Section VIII reached a historic milestone Wednesday night in Nassau County, hosting its first-ever Dual Meet Championship at Long Beach Middle School.
Uniondale, Long Beach, Roosevelt and MacArthur high schools all stepped onto the mat with a chance to be part of history. After a competitive night of matchups, Uniondale and Long Beach advanced to the finals, where the Knights ultimately emerged victorious to claim the inaugural championship title.
The moment represented more than just a final score. It highlighted years of hard work, dedication, and growth for girls wrestling programs across Nassau County.
Brianna Marquez, a junior wrestler at Uniondale High School, emphasized the significance of the sport’s expansion and what it means for female athletes.
“As many say, it’s a male-dominated sport. Anything can be woman-dominated as well. Just like how we brought wrestling into high school and college. We are getting opportunities in college. It’s so important to make the sport grow,” Marquez said.
With the dual meet championship now in the books, the focus shifts to the next major event. The Section VIII Girls Individual Championship is set for Feb. 1 at Long Beach High School.
