A Union man wanted in the assault of a Newark police sergeant during a traffic stop was taken into custody following a five-day search.

Jacque L. Cook, 25, was initially pulled over on Dec. 3 on the 200 block of South Street, when he became agitated and refused to get out of his car, according to the Newark Police Department.

While officers attempted to remove Cook from his 2013 Mercedes-Benz C25, he allegedly turned the steering wheel in the sergeant's direction and struck him before speeding away.

The sergeant was taken to University Hospital for swelling and bruising to the knee and is in stable condition.

Cook, who had a warrant out for his arrest, was found Dec. 8 by Newark police as a passenger in a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Irvington resident Jessica Washington on South 10th Street.

He initially complied when police told him to exit the car but then ran off on foot, police say. He was soon apprehended on Shanley Avenue near Avon Avenue.

Cook faces charges including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, possession of a weapon (automobile), and leaving the scene of an accident. He faces a second charge of resisting arrest for fleeing the Dec. 8 traffic stop.

Washington, who had previously been interviewed by police while searching for Cook and denied knowing his location, was also taken into custody and faces charges of obstruction and hindering apprehension.
