A shark bit a man on the hand while the man was swimming on Fire Island Tuesday, Suffolk police confirm.
Police say a 49-year-old man was swimming in the ocean off Fire Island Pines when a shark bit the man's right hand. It happened around 1:55 p.m.

The victim was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment. He is expected to be OK.
Quogue police responded to a call about an injured beachgoer at the Quogue Village Beach.
Police say a 47-year-old man was swimming in chest-deep water when he was bitten. A shark was not physically observed, however, officials say the bite was from a larger marine animal. He suffered several lacerations to his right knee.
He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center and is expected to be OK.
