Two people are dead and several others were injured in a multiple car crash on the Long Island Expressway late Monday night.

Police responded to a call for a crash on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 16 at around 11:45 p.m.

Investigators say a coach bus traveling westbound on the Long Island expressway collided with a car, causing it to strike another vehicle.

The initial crash flipped the coach bus over a median, and the bus struck two other vehicles traveling eastbound oncoming traffic.

When EMS responded to the scene, they pronounced the coach bus operator and a passenger on the bus deceased.

The operators of the initial two cars struck and one of the cars traveling eastbound were taken to local hospitals and are expected to be OK.

The operator of the other car traveling eastbound is in critical condition.

The FDNY says at least 20 other passengers have been transported to area hospitals and are expected to be OK.

NOTIFY NYC and NYPD are urging commuters to take alternate routes as lanes continue to be closed causing major delays.
