1. Stay informed: He says before boarding your flight, stay informed and know the weather for the destination you're headed to. "Anytime you go south towards Florida, or Texas or down in that area, you're going to have issues because you cannot fly through these hurricanes," he said. "If you're going to a destination, maybe you might now make it all the way but you might have people or some kind of other alternate transportation that can take you the rest of the way," says Trabucco.
3. Call the airline to re-book: If you're already at the airport and all of a sudden, your flight is canceled, he said, the worst thing you can do is stay in line at the airline and wait your turn to get another flight someplace else. He says instead, call the airline directly to rebook.
4. Take the voucher: If the airline offers a voucher, take it. Even if it means you'll get there late. It's better to have it than not.
5. Avoid overpacking: To save some money in case of an emergency he says try not to overpack, so you don't have to spend the extra fee on heavy luggage. It can put stress on the airline as well. Instead, buy some items when you get to your destination.
