Town passes law to protect Oakdale's iconic Idle Hour Mansion after legislation expires
The Town of Islip has issued a new protection to an iconic landmark in Oakdale.
The historic Vanderbilt Idle Hour Mansion is the centerpiece of the abandoned Dowling College campus.
The original protection expired when property owners failed to file legal agreements with the county.
The new law adds a planned landmark preservation overlay district. It means the owners would be required to get town approval before the mansion and other historic sites could be altered.
As News 12 has reported, the mansion has fallen victim to several break-ins and vandalism in recent months.
