The Town of Huntington held a special street dedication ceremony to honor the legacy of a longtime East Northport resident.
Fred Hughes lived in East Northport for 71 years with his wife and their six children.
The Navy veteran was a plumber for the town and volunteered for the East Northport Fire Department.
Hughes was known affection as the “Orange Hat Man” and could often be seen strolling the streets of the village.
“He’d walk and we’d lose him, we’d call him our ‘Orange Hat Man’ because we had to give him a hat so wouldn’t get lost and we’d know it was him,” says Jessica Greenbaum, Hughes’ granddaughter.
Hughes’ family are carrying on his legacy of service by volunteering at the fire department.
