A proposal to expand a popular East End business has some Riverhead town residents upset.
The town board is weighing a plan to allow the Riverhead Ciderhouse to expand its patio, add an additional tasting room and 36 extra parking spots.
Some residents say the process of expanding the business is what they're frustrated about.
One resident says the cider house has expanded before without getting approval first.
"I think one of the worst ramifications is the message that it sends to developers," they say. "You don't have to build what they approve in Riverhead. Build whatever you want and then come back and ask for forgiveness."
"The Ciderhouse has been a great corporate neighbor to the Riverhead community and the Town of Riverhead. They've gone out of their way to do the right thing for their six years in business and they're still looking to do the right thing. I think the hearing went very well and I'm confident the board will do the right thing as well," said Fred Johs, attorney for the Riverhead Ciderhouse, in a statement.
