All eyes will be on Long Island Friday as the first day of Ryder Cup competitive play gets underway at Bethpage Black — and the event is expected to be unlike any other.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend on Friday, prompting a major increase in security. Fans planning to attend are being urged to prepare for TSA-style screening and lengthy wait times at entry points.
Officials have designated secure zones around key areas including the clubhouse, the adjacent grandstand, and surrounding areas. These zones will require enhanced security checks for all attendees.
Certain items will be prohibited from the first tee grandstand and the clubhouse areas on Friday.
Among the banned items are:
  • Large umbrellas
  • Portable folding chairs
  • Hard-sided coolers
  • Large vaping devices
  • Torch-style lighters
Gates at Bethpage Black will open at 5 a.m., and fans are already adjusting their schedules accordingly.
“We were just talking with the guys that we should wake up before 4 a.m. and go to Bethpage,” said Ryder Cup fan Juho Krankka, who’s visiting from Finland. “It will be an early morning.”
Another attendee, Linda Hill from Las Vegas, shared similar plans: “My husband and I were just talking about taking the 5 a.m. train.”
In addition to on-the-ground security, flight restrictions will be in effect across the area between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Officials are warning of potential delays and “frozen zones” before, during and after the event.
