There is a safe space to go to in Suffolk County where people in recovery rom addiction can stay on track and celebrate New Year's Eve safely.

Nonprofit THRIVE Suffolk, which is part of the Family and Children's Association, will host a recovery-friendly New Year's Eve celebration.

The community and outreach center for people in recovery from addictions on Long Island hosts the party every year.

Organizers say it will look like any other New Year's Eve party, with decorations, music, dancing and a countdown to ring in the New Year.

However, there is no alcohol as it is a substance free space.

THRIVE Suffolk employees say New Year's Eve can be a trigger for people to relapse because it's associated with alcohol.

They say the substance free celebration gives people the chance to not be left out of the festivities, and be safe while celebrating.

"This gives them a chance to not isolate themselves, be connected with people and create a new norm for themselves and the people that they surround themselves with," said THRIVE's Patrick Manfredo Jones.

"We are a safe place for people to come, substance free," said THRIVE's Heather Ventimiglia.

The New Year's Eve event is free and open to everyone 18 and older.
