Thousands lose power as winds whip LI
Powerful winds buffeted Long Island Sunday, knocking down trees, snapping power lines and cutting power to thousands of residents.
PSEG LI's online outage map reported as many as 12,000 outages Sunday afternoon, although the number had dipped considerably by the evening.
One fallen tree closed a stretch of the westbound lanes on Sunrise Highway between Louden Street and County Line Road in Massapequa. Another downed tree briefly delayed LIRR service between Farmingdale and Deer Park.
In Garden City, a tree crashed through a garage on Kilburn Road. No injuries were reported.
