A Bushwick tenant is faced with an issue that not only threatens her safety but the safety of everyone in the building.
Lyric Thompson says both the front and vestibule door of the building don’t latch properly.
This is part of what caused the Twin Parks fire in January to be so extreme. The fire killed 17 Bronx residents.
“If we were fleeing from a fire because, God forbid, our building was up in flames, that is supposed to protect us,” said Thompson. “And there is no protection.”
Though the door continues not to latch, records from the Housing Preservation and Development department show the issue was corrected and building ownership Bushwick Holdings Group LLC says it has as well.
News 12 reached out to the property management company and was told they would provide the manager’s number, but no number was ever sent. News 12 also reached out to the owner of the building, and a staff member said the owner was working with tenants regarding this issue.
Less than 24 hours after reaching out to the Housing Preservation & Development department about the issue being corrected, their records changed to show the status of the violation as "open."
The building currently has over 50 open violations dating back to 2019, with 29 of those listed as “not complied."
