Parents have until the end of the day to apply for New York City’s Universal 3-K and prekindergarten programs, with the deadline set for midnight.

In Mott Haven, parents picking up their children from pre-K programs described the free child care as a critical support for their families.

The programs cost nothing for city residents, regardless of income or immigration status. Children who turn 3 or 4 this year are eligible to enroll in 3-K or pre-K for the upcoming school year.

Parents said the programs save them thousands of dollars each month while giving children opportunities to socialize and learn. One parent estimated child care can cost $2,500 a month or more, calling the free program a major relief. Others praised the schools for helping children make friends and prepare for kindergarten.

Families can apply online through the city’s enrollment system until midnight.
