Parents expressed their concern over recent lead testing Tuesday night at an Island Trees School Board meeting.
The latest lead testing at Island Trees High School has turned up levels at 40 times the acceptable rate, continuing the debate over whether the school is safe for students. Parents were disappointed that the meeting was dedicated to discussion about budget issues when they feel the recent lead testing should be a priority.
Island Trees School Board member Joseph Buda showed News 12 Long Island test results showing high levels of lead were found in the school?s basement. However, the district says there's no cause for alarm because these areas are sealed off. Buda says he?s very concerned for students? safety though.
?As far as I know, [the area with high lead levels] is not covered with plastic,? Buda says. ?They say it?s not a health risk, but it is within 50 feet of an art room. ?
It?s not the first time toxic levels of lead were found at the school. Island Trees H.S. used to have a rifle range on site until the 1990s. The district did a lead remediation project in 2006, but some say it wasn?t good enough.
Parent Brian Kelty says the school building should be closed until all lead is removed.
School officials maintain it is not an emergency situation, but some students do say they?re worried about it.
