Nurses at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson reached a tentative deal late Wednesday night, averting a strike that was set to begin on July 13.

The New York State Nurses Association says the three-year agreement includes increased staff, workplace safety protections and yearly pay raises.

“Nurses at St. Charles fought tooth and nail for a fair contract that will help us fix the staffing crisis at the hospital we love. We are proud of what we accomplished and encourage our members to ratify this contract,” said Rob Barone, intensive care nurse and president of NYSNA’s local bargaining unit.

The vote deciding whether to ratify the contract will take place on Friday.

Catholic Health provided News 12 with the following statement:

“St. Charles and NYSNA reached a tentative agreement for a new labor contract covering nurses. NYSNA has withdrawn its notice to strike, an encouraging step forward for our nurses, patients, and community. The tentative agreement reflects a continued commitment to invest in our nurses and deliver excellent patient care. We are pleased to have reached this tentative agreement and appreciate the efforts of everyone involved throughout the negotiations. NYSNA will share details regarding the ratification process, and we look forward to the outcome of that vote.”
