An athletic high school graduate who was supposed to begin college this week was fatally shot late Sunday on a sidewalk in Wyandanch.
Police say shots were fired around 11:30 p.m. at a group of people standing on the corner of Irving Avenue and Doe Street. A witness told News 12 he heard two to three shots before a car sped away.
Malik Stoddart was killed, and a 19-year-old was hit but survived.
Stoddart, 18, graduated Wyandanch High School in June and had been a member of its track and football teams. His former football coach, Dwight Singleton, says he was scheduled to leave for Monroe College on Tuesday.
Singleton says he will try to help his students deal with Stoddart's death while police search for the shooter.
Anyone with information on the shooting can call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
