A 15-year-old student died from his injuries Saturday morning after being stabbed Friday on a handball court at Hempstead High School. Police says Michael Alguera and two other teenage males were playing handball around 3:30 p.m. when they were confronted by seven to 10 young men, some wearing masks. The men ordered the boys against the wall, demanded their property and pulled a knife, according to authorities. Alguera was stabbed in the torso and taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
?It's especially tragic. These three victims offered up no resistance. They complied with the demands of their attackers. They turned over their property. It was after that the attackers decided to take it a step further and committed a murder,? says Det. Lt. Michael Fleming.Police say the suspects fled the scene and escaped through a hole in the fence. Investigators were back on the scene Saturday combing the area for clues. Police say they do not know why Alguera was singled out. They are investigating whether the attackers were part of a gang.
Police are urging anyone with information to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. Hempstead officials said there will be extra security when school reopens Tuesday.
