A Copiague teen is being held without bail after being accused in the shooting death of his friend.
Nefi Reyes, 18, was charged with manslaughter after police say he shot and killed Wilson Gil-Torres, 18, Friday afternoon.
Police say Reyes was showing Gil-Torres a handgun in his home on Great Neck Road when it went off, hitting Gil-Torres in the torso. The shooting happened just blocks from Copiague middle and high schools.
Gil-Torres was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Islip.
Authorities told News 12 Long Island that Reyes, who owns the gun, called 911 immediately after the gun was fired.
Friends of the two students said Reyes and Gil-Torres were best friends. Reyes' family called the shooting "accidental."
Reyes is expected to be back in court next week.
