New York state will mail out inflation refund checks of up to $400 to more than 8 million New Yorkers beginning in October, including 1.25 million Long Islanders.

The State's Department of Taxation and Finance's website says the one-time payments are designed to "provide relief to New Yorkers who have paid increased sales taxes due to inflation." The refunds were approved as part of this year's state budget plan.

"It's going to be upwards of $400 for families. We're going to give it back directly," Gov. Kathy Hochul said at an event touting the refunds back in May.

"Just giving you that check when it comes time to be shopping for fall school clothes and supplies."

But not everyone will receive a refund. To be eligible, residents had to file state income tax returns for tax year 2023 and meet qualified income thresholds.

Single tax filers reporting an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less will earn a $200 refund. Married joint filers who reported $150,000 or less will receive $400. There are other refund brackets as well.
