A new Tanger Outlets shopping center opened Thursday in Deer Park. The development is called the Tanger Outlets at the Arches. It is very different than what Long Islanders are used to at the outlets in Riverhead; the shopping center is designed to look like an old European market.
Many lined up early to get the first crack at these new stores, hoping to catch some bargains.
The shopping center has 120 stores, 70 that opened Thursday. Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Kenneth Cole and Banana Republic are among the chains that will have stores there. There will also be a 16-screen Regal Cinemas with an IMAX theater and an ice skating rink.Critics of the shopping center say it will cause a significant increase of traffic in the area and create safety hazards. Tanger General Manager Curt Fickeisen says measures have been put into place to ease traffic concerns. Roads have been widened around the new shopping center and stop lights have been added, Fickeisen says.
A free shuttle service from the Deer Park LIRR station to the outlet is also available. Those who take advantage of the shuttle are being given free coupon books with up to $600 in savings.
