Visit the home of America’s pioneering poet! We are taking a tour of the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site on this Road Trip Close to Home.
Start off in the museum and educational center dedicated to him. Learn all about his life.
See his original copy of "Leaves of Grass." His desk from the 1849 Woodbury schoolhouse where he taught. And a printing press, much like the one Walt Whitman would have used when he founded the Long Islander, a paper that is still in existence today.
There are many portraits - see his face and even hear his voice reading his most famous work.
Enjoy the outdoors, stop in the art gallery, and take a tour of Walt Whitman's house.
The federal style farmhouse stands on the grounds where it was originally built back in 1810. Peek inside the rooms restored to the year 1821.
