For years, residents and officials in the town of Oyster Bay have fought over what will be built on the former site of the Cerro Wire plant.

The most recent idea is Syosset Park - a more than 90-acre mixed use development project from the Simon Property Group. Some neighbors are worried that the soil underneath the surface might be toxic.

Chirs DiFilippo, a neighbor to the property, claims the soil has not been tested enough and that possible industrial contaminants from Cerro and a nearby capped landfill could be released during construction, or later on. He and others want an independent environmental study, saying they don't trust state and local reports.

The developer of the property say it’s been tested numerous times in the past and will continue to be tested in the years going forward to make sure whatever is built there is safe.

“We chose to go through the state Brownfields program with new and independent testing in a very public process to provide that information to the public in the most transparent way, because we felt we owed that to the community,” says Chuck Davis Simon.
