A shark sighting Saturday afternoon closed Nickerson, Lido and Malibu beaches.

Lifeguards spotted the shark 75 feet from the shoreline.

"We want residents to know that extra lifeguards were out there, not only watching but also monitoring the area," says Don Clavin, Hempstead town supervisor.

Swimming resumed after two hours once officials determined there was no longer a threat to the public.

Some swimmers say they were nervous to enter the water again."

When I was swimming, I was watching out to see if there was anything around me," explained one swimmer.

Hempstead officials say there have been at least nine shark sighting this summer near area beaches.
