Hurricane Gert is creating some dangerous conditions on Long Island's beaches as it churns out in the Atlantic Ocean.
Beach officials say although the storm won't come ashore, it will still create unsafe surf. Long Beach was completely closed to swimmers Wednesday due to strong rip currents. Swimmers at Jones Beach were only allowed in the water up to their knees.
Rip currents can pull a swimmer far out into the ocean. Swimmers trapped in the current should swim parallel to the shore.
