Swim Across America raises almost $2.1 million toward cancer research

"We started in 1992 with 15 swimmers, and we raised $15,000. Today, we have 615 swimmers and will probably break our $2 million goal," said event director Jean Fufidio.

Over 800 participants gathered at Larchmont Yacht Club on Saturday to fundraise for cancer research as part of the Swim Across America-Long Island Sound Open Water Swim.

Event organizers say the Swim Across America Larchmont event is one of the largest in the nation. It started at Larchmont Yacht Club and concluded at Larchmont Shore Club.

"We started in 1992 with 15 swimmers, and we raised $15,000. Today, we have 615 swimmers and will probably break our $2 million goal," said event director Jean Fufidio.

The proceeds from the event go toward cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center, Cancer Support Team and Weill Cornell Medicine.

Funds will also support the organization’s “KIDS Swimming FOR KIDS” program – raising money for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Kids and NY Presbyterian Children's Hospital research labs.

"Let's go cure cancer. Let's get it done," said founder Matthew Vossler.
