Health officials announced Monday there is one suspected case of swine flu in Nassau County and Suffolk says it has no confirmed cases.
Officials have not revealed the identity or location of the Nassau resident due to privacy reasons. Health officials say that the case is a mild one. The county is also examining three other cases.
Nassau health officials say they are in constant contact with hospitals and schools to keep ahead of any further outbreaks. County health commissioner Dr. Maria Carney says she thinks the county will see more cases.
Suffolk health officials say they are awaiting test results from two individuals.
There are 28 confirmed cases of swine flu at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens. The school is closed through Tuesday as crews disinfect the building. Schneider Children?s Hospital in New Hyde Park treated most of the students and parents over the weekend.
?I got really achy. My body was hurting me,? says Samantha Cosentino, one of the Queens students believed to have contracted the illness. ?I had a fever I had a really bad cough, which I still do.?
Officials are urging residents not to panic.
?Fortunately the cases we've seen so far in the United States have been mild and have not required hospitalization and no death,? says Nassau University Medical Center?s Dr. Janice Verley.
At least 50 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the United States. Symptoms of swine flu include a fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting.
In Mexico, the outbreak's epicenter, soldiers handed out six million facemasks to help stop the spread of the virus that is suspected in up to 103 deaths in that country. Spain reported its first confirmed swine flu case on Monday and said another 17 people were suspected of having the disease. The European Union health commissioner advised Europeans to avoid nonessential travel to Mexico and the United States. AP wire reports contributed to this reportCDC
