The Smithtown supervisor's race remains too close to call after primary night.

There are 450 absentee ballots, leading many to speculate whether it could be the end for the longest serving town supervisor in state history.

Pat Vecchio, 87, remains optimistic this morning after 40 years as town supervisor. Vecchio found himself campaigning for a primary to keep his job.

Republican Party leaders withheld their nomination from Vecchio, endorsing Town Councilman Ed Wehrheim instead.

Last night Wehrheim was ahead of Vecchio by 39 votes, but Vecchio says it's not over yet.  

Wehrheim, who is a longtime town board member, believes he'll be the winner. Wehrheim says he sensed a lot of voters wanted a change.

"People want Smithtown to remain Smithtown, which we intend to do, but they're also on board with the town improving. There needs to be improvements in infrastructure, recreation facilities and specifically the business districts," said Wehrheim.
