Emergency service units were called to Newfield High School Monday when a student collapsed on the field, school officials say.

According to a statement from Middle Country Central School District Superintendent Dr. Roberta Gerold, the student collapsed after being outside for roughly four minutes during an intramural summer sports program.

The superintendent says district personnel immediately began administering emergency first aid until paramedics arrived. The student was then rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital.

"At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the student and the student's family," the statement said. "The district will provide more information as it becomes available."

Counselors and support staff will be available at Newfield High School Tuesday from 9 a.m. from 12 p.m.
