The Port Jefferson School District sent a letter home to parents after a message of hate was found at the high school.
The superintendent says a drawing of a Star of David and a swastika were inscribed under the word "fight" on a table in a classroom.
Officials say Suffolk police didn't believe the incident required the hate crime unit to get involved.
The superintendent says the school is investigating and the student responsible will be held accountable.
