It was a night for suicide awareness Friday at Sleepy Hollow High School during its varsity basketball game against Hendrick Hudson High School.
The event featured speaker Peggy Noonan, the aunt of Sleepy Hollow varsity boys' basketball coach Chris Starace. She's also the mother of Kevin Noonan Jr., a 22-year-old senior at Penn State University who died by suicide in September of 2022.
She addressed the crowd before the game and emphasized the importance of prioritizing mental health.
"If you're worried about someone, check on them, have them write things down if they dont want to talk about it. It's OK to not be OK," She stressed. "If you yourself is struggling or you know someone who is, call 988. Nine eight eight is a 24/7 free and confidential lifeline."
The final score at the game was Hendrick Hudson 55, Sleepy Hollow 42.
